Dr. Michael W. Lehker

Dr. Michael Lehker is a professor of microbiology in the Department of Biomedicine at The University of Texas at Brownsville. He currently holds the position of Chair and Associate Dean in the College of Biomedical Sciences and Health Professions. Dr. Lehker teaches microbiology, genetics, developmental biology and molecular biology at the undergraduate and graduate level. He also maintains an active research laboratory with undergraduate and graduate students assisting him in the elucidation of cellular iron metabolism and the function of iron in trichomonad pathogenesis. Furthermore, he is also co-directing several educational initiatives (A-PRIME TIME, RIMI, and BRIDGE to the Doctorate) with the goal to increase participation of LRGV students in the medical and biomedical workforce. He is also pursuing projects and research that will increase the effectiveness of pre-medical/biomedical education. Dr. Lehker received his undergraduate and master’s degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. He received his Ph.D. in microbiology from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. In 2003, he joined the faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Texas at Brownsville. Prior to joining UTB he held faculty positions at UTEP and UTHSCSA.
